Indiozinhos Psicodélicos

São Paulo, the last month

towards the end of my 5 month stay in Brazil  I worked on some new performances together with artists from São Paulo.

*

After finishing most of the recordings of the new album at Casa do Mancha, I prepared an entire set with José Vieira (piano) and Pedro Falcão (cuíca and pandeiro) called “Juju & Seus Balangandãs”, featuring old Brazilian songs mostly from the 1920’s and 30’s (carnival marches and samba) in a very theatrical style. We presented it twice at Projeto Alberto Seabra 1128.

*

Also in Projeto Seabra 1128 I met the singer Rita Maria aka Ritamaria Rirri and we became the two Japanese twin sisters Lita-San & Lita-San. We prepared a show together adding clowny coreographies and presented it at Shintori (a fancy Japanese restaurant in São Paulo which looks like it could be out of a James Bond movie from the 1970’s), where Rita is a resident musician. Rita Maria has just released a new album on the internet with very nice songs and arrangements of her own. Check her songs on soundcloud!

*

Finally I met the genius and mad scientist Paulo Beto. Some synths that he plays were designed and built for his special performances by Arthur Joly (take a look at these incredible machines http://www.recosynth.com/). I performed 2 songs at Paulo’s solo show at Centro Cultural Rio Verde with a cool little instrument called the pocket piano built by Critter & Guitari, and I’m getting one for myself soon. It’s like the ukulele of the  analog synthesizers! No pics or videos but below is the flyer, and I expect to collaborate more in the future!

FLYER PB

… Thanks again to all these nice people and new friends in São Paulo…

and many special thanks to Casa do Mancha and the crew for all the support on making the new album … which will be out sometime in 2014.

Indiozinhos Psicodélicos

We just played a gig in Sao Carlos at a very nice venue called GIG and we’re recording my 2nd album at Casa do Mancha! Bernard flew from Porto Alegre to join us and to record on the new album.

My next concert will be a new thing: cabaret style, old brazilian songs (by great names such as Noel Rosa, Ary Barroso) accompanied by a piano (José Vieira) and a cuica (Pedro Falcao), at Projeto Alberto Seabra 1128 in Sao Paulo. No ukulele this time, hands free!

Back in Brazil!

With a first stop in Recife, Pernambuco where I played a show with friend Zeca Viana, who also took me to the radio show “Coquetel Molotov”. I met Zeca last year in São Paulo and at the time I collaborated in a song for his upcoming album “Psicotransa”. I will post the podcast soon, which includes an interview and 4 live songs.

2nd stop: Rio. Cabaré das Pulgas Saltitantes was born, the first ever Ukulele Cabaret of Rio de Janeiro! Organized by Ana Bandarra of Digga Digga Duo at Saloon 79, a very cool venue which resembles an old time American saloon. It sounds like it will turn into a regular event and there will be a 2nd edition in May. I got to play some tunes with Digga Digga Duo, plus my solo set and many people brought their ukes for some sing-alongs.

3rd stop: São Paulo! This is will be my new home for some time. Working on my 2nd album from scratch, it’s time to write songs. Luckily I already have a rock n roll band here, Indiozinhos Psicodélicos, and we will record at Casa do Mancha. Casa do Mancha is one of my fav stops in town and where it all got started. It was Mancha’s home before it turned into a recording studio and then into a venue, where artists like Zeca Viana, Rumbo Reverso and Bárbara Eugénia have just recorded their albums, and Mr. Mancha himself is the drummer in my band.

new recordings in 2013

This year I’ll be working in three different projects which shall be released sometime in the future in cd and/or vinyl:

2012-10-11 18.45.51

1) a first EP of Chips and Salsa, featuring 6 original songs – I’m writing new stuff to which Chris is adding beautiful arrangements, all done over the internet

nick_christof

2) a new collaboration with Nick Castro, who toured Portugal last year – Nick is writing some beautiful songs to which I’m adding lyrics in Portuguese, sounding somewhere in between Tropicalia and 1960’s French and Italian film scores

2012-09-21 20.18.28

3) … and I will be working on my second album with my first ever rock n’ roll band Indiozinhos Psicodélicos! In fact I am moving to Brazil soon to work with these guys and more gangsters from São Paulo, hoping to absorb as much as I can from the fantastic musical culture of this country!

Soon announcing new tour dates and radio shows, starting in Recife!
