UI picks

Rita’s episode for UI Picks, a new radio series curated by the Underground Institute, for Berlin’s Reboot.fm.

Underground Institute Picks is curated by the Underground Institute, an international agency for adventurous music and platform for culture. UI Picks episodes are tailored for selected underground radio stations.
In This episode Portuguese multi-instrumentalist Rita Braga explores the whimsical and theatrical recordings made in the 20th century, with some of her favourites throughout the decades, taking you on a time travel through pleasant and delirious roads from 1905 to 1996 – from early wax cylinder single-take recordings, via elaborate cosmic and space-age instrumentals, to expressive and often camp vocalists.

New single and video: Tremble Like a Ghost

A new song has been released today, as a first single of an upcoming album, recorded and produced at Baby Microbe Recording Studio in London. It’s ghostly, it’s catchy, and it will make you want to giggle and tremble and dance. More info below. Premiere on Houdini Mansions.

*

Tremble Like a Ghost” is the new single by Portuguese avant-pop songstress Rita Braga with a video by renowned animator Martha Colburn.

Tremble Like a Ghost” is a dangerous and quirky earworm that will stay with you longer than its 3:33 minute duration. The juicy lyrics, which reference specific key dates and events that took place over the last 100 years (starting with Pickwick Club’s collapse in 1925), may leave room for interpretation for a niche audience who likes to decipher riddles – or you might just want to stomp your feet and snap your fingers along with it. The unorthodox line-up of instruments consists of violin (played by Galina Juritz), a primitive drum machine as used by the likes of Suicide or Wall of Voodoo, organ and bass. The video’s raw visuals, which combine animation and live footage of Rita and guests appearing as ghostly characters, are a surrealistic assemblage which evoke 1920’s and 30’s cartoons (think of Disney’s Skeleton Dance or Betty Boop cartoons featuring Cab Calloway), traditional Japanese style makeup and the early cinematic experiments of George Méliès.

my bird song took flight to Finland

Long time since I made any update.

Here is a live video with the Finnish group KUKElius performing their own version of my song Erosão at a church in Karkkila, during the 2nd edition of Kukulele Festival.

Erosão translates to “Erosion”, but they made their own free adaptation with Finnish lyrics, and renamed it Pääskynen (“The Swallow”).

Concert at Giv Lowe in Lisbon

I played at the opening of Nuno Saraiva‘s exhibition and used the “braguibox”, a portable amp designed and built for me by Jamba, the mad Parisian scientist who moved to Porto. Nuno was my teacher of comics and illustration many years ago and it all comes together.

Bordeaux!

Was this my 12th concert in Bordeaux?

I first went to this city to meet my friend Chris Carlone (BORTS MINORTS) and joined him in Cafe Pompier, in the Summer of 2009. Since then the nice people of Let’s Panic Later invited me many times to return. This time I did a house show at Ruth’s, which turned out to be my fav house show so far. Stephane had a strange microphone from 1910 that looked and felt like a sea stone and I got to use it in some songs. He also has other peculiar instruments such as that toy V-guitar.

Doing a few shows in Portugal this month: Galeria LAR in Lagos, Festival Cidade PreOcupada in Montemor-o-Novo, and a show with special collaborations at CCOP in Porto in the line of the unpredictable cabarets I organized 2 years ago: with Jamba we did a bollywood inspired set colored with video projections by Martha Colburn, and with Filipe Silva I did slower ukulele songs with a lot of delay effects.

Next show will be in Lisbon at MAGA Sessions, 19th of July.

Andaluzia

Thanks to Fernando Vacas (the man behind Eureka Records from Cordoba) and the multifaceted artist Victor Coyote, I played 4 concerts in the South of Spain: Sevilla – Jaén – Fuengirola – Cordoba. I did a small set with my songs and was a guest of Victor in a few songs, who was acomppanied by Ricardo Moreno (drummer of Los Ronaldos). Besides being great fun, these two guys make a wonderful set together and I’m hoping they will play in Portugal too.

Rita on TV

Last night went to the TV news (RTP2 – Channel 2 in Portugal) for a short live interview about my new EP. Phew. Done (it was actually not so difficult to do)

Western Wild

New collaborations with US artist Martha Colburn! In between three shows I did in Algarve this past weekend (in Faro and Guia), we were doing some landscape research for her upcoming film Western Wild about the German author Karl May and did some video shooting in Praia da Falésia. Some of this footage might result in a new music video for one of the songs on my new EP Gringo in São Paulo. Check out her blog about new film project!

“Ukulele i ja”

“Ukulele i ja” is the title given to my first article ever written and published, on Vreme magazine from Serbia, sharing some funny stories of my tours! It came out in late November and I’m posting here its original version in English for the readers who have no clue about Serbian language and where Banatsko Novo Selo is.

translated article from a Serbian magazine

Here is an English translation of selected parts of that article that came out on Vreme magazine in late August which mentioned my concert in KC Grad in Belgrade, written by Dragan Kremer. Translation from Serbian by Saša Rakezić, revised by Tim Stappard.

COMING OUT AT NIGHT

Rita Braga, KC Grad, Belgrade 22.08.2014

“(…) Rita Braga (b. 1985 in Lisbon, lives in Porto) studied musicology, did illustration work, composed music and also voiceovers for animation, film and commercials and acted in cabaret and film… in 2004 she started touring around the world, appearing in burlesque plays to even elementary school performances. Last Spring, she was on her first ex-Yugoslavian tour where she appeared in variuos places, from the Sardine Factory in Mali Lošinj, Croatia, to Salon of Applied Arts in Maribor, Slovenia, and Belgrade’s KC Grad and memorably in Skopje. “Like most people I met in Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Macedonia I too long for that distant country Yugoslavia where being a poet used to be a very respected job”, she said. “And Skopje is my new favorite European capital: it’s like being inside a Monty Phython movie – mixed with ancient Rome”. On her latest tour around Serbia, she will play at Deliblato Sands (where there’s a comic workshop), and Pančevo (playing at the Film Festival). Rita’s career is a mishmash of everything – field recordings, analogue sounds made on Moog, self-published material, internet radio, pirate webcasts, low-fi and SoundCloud, home tapes of her singing over the sound of old records and broken old radios. Throughout she has been changing identities, leaving them behind like old clothes. She has collaborated with numerous musicians, (such as Presidente Drogado), and forms bands in a jiffy. Original posters for her shows are usually made by well known graphic artists. She even claims that cartoon characters appear in her dreams, and give her “career” advice.. It’s not just coincidental that the cover design for her first album Cherries That Went to The Police (released in 2011, with musicians including collaborators of Zappa and Waits) was designed by Aleksandar Zograf in person!

And take her music, her repertoire – the word “eclectic” is not enough to describe it. It’s a sound collage that includes music coming out of Brazil and Bollywood, adding everything from Mozart to cowboy songs, with ethno-musical references connected even to the countries that she hasn’t visited yet. There’s Katyusha, and on Her…Home Recordings Vol. 3 there is Jedva čekam da nedelja dođe. Actually, she does everything but fado!

Even though she sometimes uses piano, synth, or pre-recorded tape with minimalist electronics (Rockin’ Back Inside My Heart sounds like Julee Cruise), while playing live she mostly only plays her miniature ukulele (shorter: uke), which definitely affects the choice of styles and numbers. (…)

Anyway, Rita Braga perfectly fitted into Belgrade’s monsoon summer. With her Do-It-Yourself approach, without virtuosity, but convincingly and charmingly, she toys with music making; not unlike The Lounge Lizards did before. There was even a random Intermission supplemented by a passing train, which moved just beneath the stage. (…)”

new instrument: it’s not a truck, it’s a banjolele!

rita_DSC04380 This Summer I passed by a small town in Germany called Gross-Umstadt and visited the showroom of ukulele.de, one of the largest ukulele shops online and came out with this baby. The picture was later taken by Marc Behrens (this guy, not the Danish model) in the village of Hirschberg, where I also had my first encounter with African sheep.

a short film and a music video

After writing the original music for Catarina de Oliveira‘s film “Le Couple Silencieux”, she decided to include me on it as a ukulele trobairitz. She even tailored this special outfit, same style as all characters featured in it. This film was shown for the first time in Espaço Mira in Porto and there will be more short films with other stories as part of the larger project. Obrigada Catarina! malhada_20140803_4308ed … and shortly after returning from the Balkan tour I went to Galicia, more precisely to the Portuguese-Spanish border to shoot a video for Victor Coyote‘s upcoming album, a song we recorded together. It was fun and it should be released within the next month. Gracias Victor! rita & victor

Back home from Belgium!

Thanks to everyone in Charleroi, Antwerp, Brussels and Liège! Every night I felt like I was acting in a different film.

Balkan tour

IMG_5514

Like most people I met in Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Macedonia I too long for that distant country Yugoslavia where being a poet used to be a very respected job. The picture above was taken at the gig at the abandoned sardine factory in Mali Losinj in Croatia, where Dunja lives (on the island, not at the factory). In the same site there was also a screenprint workshop led by Pakito Bolino of Le Dernier Cri and a big sardine barbecue, which felt just like Portugal. This was one of the 12 shows. And Skopje probably became my new favorite European capital: it’s like being inside a Monty Phython movie – mixed with ancient Rome.

Oh and there was an appearance on Rrokum stage TV from Kosovo, plus other updates on the press section after this tour. Yessir I love the Balkans.
